Description: Beautiful and rare French verge fusee keywind repeater. The dial signed 'Vignaud, A TOULOUSE' has a small chip near 8. Gilt full plate movement with pierced cock, keywind and keyset (uses #12 key, for the winding arbor and a #7 key for the center post to set the time, both included). Watch chime with 2 hammers on a bell which is attached to the back cover. The dust cover signed as is the dial. The glass crystal is in good condition with no scratch or chips. The silver case is in good condition, one mild indentation on the back (see pictures). The watch runs and chimes correctly, though the bell has a dull sound to it.. Quite a find for a watch more than 200 years old.
Toulouse is some 456 miles from Paris, the capital of the great Midi-Pyrénées region located in the South of France on the banks of the Garonne, close to the Pyrénées and halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Vignaud as a watchmaker was not particularly well known, but the city was the home to many craftsman, jewellers and other tradesmen supporting what was even then a booming economy at the center of the region.
