250 YEAR OLD SURVIVOR!

c1752 "John Thomas, London" Verge Fusse
Hallmarked Sterling Silver Pair Case, w/Signed Silver Dial

Price = $1795

SOLD

Description:   c1752 hallmarked Sterling Silver verge fusse by John Thomas of London.  A rare find and a very old timepiece with a silver dial, signed by the maker over 250 years ago, an amazing watch!  John Thomas is listed a having apprenticed in London in 1701 and mad watches through the early to mid 18th century.  The movement is highly decorated with Egyptian pillars, hand pierced ornaments and a pierced and engraved balance cock with a grotesque at the base (gargoyle type face, see detailed pics below).  Pair Case is Hallmarked Sterling Silver, London with the crowned leopards head, lion passant, and a small "r" (no sovereigns head) indicating manufacture of the case in 1752.  The outer case is not perfect, but it has done it's job over the last 250 years to protect the watch.  The dial is hand engraved with Roman numerals, an outer chapter marke off in 5 minute increments 5 to 60, the makers signature "Thomas" and "London".  The hands are original to the watch as well, hand made blued steel, not their unique character in the pictures below.  I've had quite a number of verge escapement watches over the years but this one is probably the most exciting.  I've held on to it for many years, not wanting to part with it, but now it's time to put it up for sale, you won't another like it.
