Description: c1820 English 18k hunter cased watch ~2" in diameter (56mm). Movement and dial signed by famous and listed maker "Jos. Johnson, 25 Church St., Liverpool". This is an early Jos. Johnson, note the uncompensated balance. Case hallmarked on inner and outer covers "18k", and the case number matches the movement number, 13519, so it is without a doubt an all original piece, in excellent condition with minmimal wear. Case is in excellent condition (see pictures, it's really fantastic for a 180 year old watch) with engine turned engraving. Watch is keywound through rear (under back cover) keyset on the face (at centerpost), and has a brass inner dust cover. Signed porcelain dial has Roman numerals, and looks to be near perfect. Spade and poker hour/minute hands, a blued seconds hand. Movement is a lever fusse with Massey Escapement, an uncompensated balance, large Diamond End Stone and highly jewelled for it's time. A rare and significant piece from a listed and respected maker, Joseph Johnson's watches were ahead of their time. He made watches from the very early to mid 1800's (beginning approximately in 1800 through 1840 or 1850) and also exported watches for sale in the United States. Comes with key and chain, don't miss this one, I've had only three of these over the years and they command premium prices.
