Description:  This verge has English silver pair cases, which are hallmarked London 1776, the year of America's Independance!  The gilt full plate verge movement features square baluster pillars and a pierced cock with two feet.  The movement is also decorated with more pierced work and is signed “J. Tarts, London” # 1591, who is listed in Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World as having been in operation in London in the Later half of the 18th Century, consitant with providence and markings on the watch. The movement is in good condition – there are some scratches around the pins. The movement does work but I wouldn't recommend use of this watch as a daily timekeeper due to it's age.  The silver champeleve dial is decorated with black enamel Roman numerals and black five-minute Arabic numerals. The numbers are decorated with engraved and enamel arches. The middle of the dial is slightly recessed and is decorated with a cherub in high relief standing on a shell and holding a banner in his hand. On the banner it is written in black enamel “J. Tarts” – although the lettering is a little faint. The dial is further decorated with gold points and gilt filigree hands. The dial is a super example of a champeleve dial and is in near perfect condition. The silver pair cases are clearly hallmarked and both have a smooth plain finish. Both cases have wear and are not in perfect condition. The inner case has a small amount of the inner bezel missing but the bezel which holds the glass is fine and the inner case closes fine. The inner case does have several bruises and dents and the bow has been repaired at some point. The outer case again has several bruises and dents and is worn around the front lip. However this is an authenticated watch from 1776 and is still in presentable and working condition.  The watch comes with an antique key.
