c1884 Early Columbus 18 size 15 jewel Hunter
"Transitional" both Stemwind and Keywind
Price = $395
SOLD
Description:
c1884
18 size 15 jewel Columbus "Transitional" Hunter. This was only
the 2nd year where Columbus manufactured their own watches in the USA.
Prior to 1883 the company imported movements from the Swiss and assembled
them here. Watch has a perfect new enamelled dial w/Roman numerals,
red 5 minute markers and blue spade hands, signed "Columbus Watch Co.".
Gilt full plate lever set movement with pressed jewels, marked "C.W.Co.,
Columbus O.". Serial Number 33,769 is also a rare transitional
model. Transitionals were made in the period when watches and their
production lines were being changed from key wind to stem wind, incorporating
both features into the watch. Thus, this watch can be wound
either by the crown or with a key! Gold filled scolloped
edge case, marked Fahys 14k Monarch, case number 5054977, shows brassing
wear on the high points, is very nicely decorated with scroll work surround
on each side, and an open initial shield. Bow has a slight nick as
well (see pictures below). I get very few of these Columbus watches
for sale, and this one is a rare transitional model to boot, get it while
it's available!
