VEHICLE SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:  This car was originally from Miami’s Fisher Island, where it is said to have resided for over 60 years! It was sold to a Florida dealer who ran his business from an actual 1920s Cadillac LaSalle dealership building, so it was quite appropriate to have it for sale there once again. I purchased the car from this dealership and then had the engine reworked by Automotive Archeologists in West Palm Beach Florida before having it transported to it's current location as part of my collection in West Virginia.

Finished in maroon with black fenders and running boards, tan cloth interior with tan leather covering the “chauffeur’s” compartment up front, this is style at its best! Even the original rear sun screens are still with this LaSalle! If you want to see how the upper crust lived in the 30s, feast your eyes on this one, a wonderful and original example of elegance in a motorcar!

I doubt you'll ever find a better original or more complete example for the same money. The original jack and tool set are still in the trunk, and you don't find that very often! The car is original including the interior and paint. The engine has been restored as I mentioned earlier, to the tune of $4595. It was removed from the car and gone over completely, no oil or water leaks, all the gaskets and main/rear seals replaced, crank bearings replaced/refitted, the distributor replaced with an original Cadillac unit, water pump, steering box rebuilt (plus realigned and tie rods adjusted) and replaced, new freeze plugs, radiator cleaned, rodded and flushed, complete chassis and engine lube, spark plugs replaced, complete tune-up, brakes and clutch adjusted, all new hoses and clamps, starter motor cleaned and overhauled, engine painted before it was re-installed in the car. There is a shut off valve on the gass feed from the vacuum canister as it tends to leak down if it sits for a while. On the body, the window riser handles and mechanisms rebuilt, Drivers upper door hinge replaced. I have a series of paper photos taken during the engine restoration.

The odometer reads 04992 but I have no way of knowing the actual miles. The car is in excellent original condition including the original interior, carpets are a bit faded and could be replaced. Paint shows some age, but is still presentable and looks nice from about 10 feet, ultimately it could be repainted, but it is serviceable as is. Chrome looks nice enough but you can see some light pitting if you get close up, plus there are two pieces of chrome trim on the trunk and rear apron that will need to be rechromed. Tires are good and servicable but do show some age. It is very original and 99.5% complete, still retaining the original upholstery and Cadillac/LaSalle factory trim ... you don't see many of them like that.

EARLY LASALLE HISTORY:  The first LaSalle's rolled aff the assembly line at Cadillac in 1927, the first design for GM by the now legendary Harley Earl. He was hired as a design consutant for the LaSalle. GM was after a more youthfull and stylish look for this new line of cars from Cadillac. In fact, Earl used modelling clay to mock up his designs, now common practice in the industry, it was unique for the time and considered somewhat of a radical idea! Harley was supposed to go back to Los Angeles in a few weeks' time, but rather he remained with General Motors until he retired as the company's director of design 32 years later. The LaSalle was his first effort there inspired by the Hispano-Suiza.

GM engineers designed a new V-8 for the LaSalle line. It was a simpler, less expensive engine and, in the long run, the LaSalle unit that proved superior in every respect to the original Cadillac V-8. The new engine performed so well that an enlarged version was quickly developed for the 1928 Cadillac. Changes for 1929, included boring the engine out to 3.25 inches for 328 cid (5.4 liters), boosting horsepower to 86 HP, and LaSalle now adopted the "Syncro-Mesh" transmission pioneered by Cadillac the year before. Mechanical brakes were also improved. Any LaSalle was capable of 70 miles an hour and LaSall proved to be a winner in the Indianapolis 500, outdoing it's competitors by nearly twice the length of the course.

It was undoubtedly one of the best looking American car sof its' day, with fenders that were long and sweeping. The two-tone color combinations, a novelty in the late 1920's, were sensational. The LaSalle's dashing looks, fine performance, and competitive pricing, made it an instant hit. The1929 models had a longer wheelbase which had proved popular, so all body styles except the roadster and phaetons were built on a 130-inch frame. The pubic apparently agreed, since sales for the LaSalle grew, even as demand for the larger more expensive Cadillac line dropped by half.

1929 LaSalle Specifications & Pictures

A picture of the firewall plate is shown below. To the best of my knowledge it is an all matching all original car including the color schemes. It is not a restored car other than the engine work I had done.

Additional information provided by Richard Earl

Great idea having Harley Earl’s name with this beautiful motoramic masterpiece!  He’d be proud you rightfully associate him as the true car architect.

I’ve included some links below from the Official Harley Earl Website you may wish to peruse (best if you have a high speed connection and your screen settings are higher than 800 by 600 pixels):

There is only one other plate on the firewall ( I had to clean it up with steel wool so it was readable). It identifies patents and the engine number 404437.  I took a picture of the engine block as well so you can see it is a matching numbers original car.

Legal Notices:   As is typical of older or vintage vehicles I must remind all bidders that regardless of how
nice this car is, it is not like new. This car is in very nice original condition for a 75 YEAR OLD CAR, but it
is by no means perfect. Buyers are cautioned to make sure they understand this is an antique car, not a
restored car, new car, or show car, but it is in very good original condition with a restored engine and drivetrain.
Please expect a certain amount of wear, use, and flaws as is typical on ANY used car. All used cars including
this one may have nicks, chips, scratches and any other marks or wear that are associated with use and
consistent with age and mileage of the vehicle. Obviously a car that is 75 years old will show more wear and
have more flaws than one that is 2 or 10 years old.
